I've known this 'pinnacle of gothic literature in the Netherlands' since I was a kid and was shocked to learn how violent it exactly was. I guess they toned it down for the children's adaptations.Some historical context: gothic literature is in this case literature from the 13the century, and the Netherlands was used to denote the region of what is now the Netherlands, Belgium and a part of northern France. It is written in Middle Dutch, which still is surprisingly readable (after reading theLike a Disney cartoon directed by Sam Peckinpah.
Ever since reading Circe, I've been interested in myths and fables. It is such an interesting genre--they're the basis of all of our stories. I don't read them quite like I do regular fiction. I don't analyze the character psyches too much, or expect it to say much about our society. Instead, I think of these stories as the precursors to others. I was expecting a typical folk tale, but instead I got Reynard the Fox, a worthy rival to Machiavelli. From criminal to king, he makes Robin Hood look like an idiot.
Darker than expected but still a good story.
The book is an absolute classic that has thankfully been preserved since the 1100s. An enjoyable read.
