This book is a sneaker. It seems like a simple story, written quite simply as well. But there was something in it that reminded me of Victor Hugo. Big themes. Συνήθως τα πολύ περιγραφικά βιβλία δεν με εντυπωσιάζουν και θεωρώ ότι υπονομεύουν την αφήγηση.Ο Λοτί με τις περιγραφές της φύσης που συνδυάζονται αρμονικά και οργανικά με τα αφηγηματικά μέρη δημιουργεί ένα μυθιστόρημα σαν ιμπρεσιονιστικό καμβά.Η θεματολογία του; Έντονα ανθρωπινη, ο θάνατος που καλύπτει τη ζωή, που με τη σειρά της συνεχίζει δραματικά και αμετάκλητα.

Si vous avez l'édition de "Le livre de poche" attention aux notes de bas de pages. La personne qui s'est chargée de la préface (Alain Buisine) donne dans une de ses notes de bas de page la fin de l'histoire!! (attention à la note p.22)Je dois avouer que ça m'a un peu gâché ma lecture... Même si j'ai beaucoup aimé lire ce livre! J'étais très attachée aux personnages, à cette ambiance (mais je l'aurais sûrement été plus si je n'avais pas su la fin!)

A nice piece from Loti. As in many others of his books, the author "pretends" to know the story as having heard it from a fellow mariner. We see three different stories here - Yann, Gaud and Sylvestre - and yet, it's just one, the story of a People, living tahnks to the sea, and yet knowing that that very sea could as easily take as it has given.
