Write-Up Containing Books ميرامار

Reading each character's POV--all four, five times--you get the following revelation: This man is the perfect character. You could write an entire novel with each one. Personalities are ingrained in the narrative in such a way that you believe them alive, breathing: killing, hating, making mistakes. The setting is a clever one (Balzac would be proud!). The eponymous locale is a doll's house of raving/roving men who set their eyes on the newest acquisition: the cleaning girl. What ensues is one

Miramar is clever in its form and compelling in its depiction of a social reality. The late 60s in Alexandria. Around 15 years after the Revolution that took the nationalistic leader Nasser to power in Egypt, an atmosphere of decay prevails and pervades the novel. In a seedy pension, very reminiscent of Balzacs Vauquer pension and owned by a former beauty from Greek origins, several characters live together. They are representatives of different generations and social classes: former supporters of

Ah, you remember! And my self comes back to me. Told by multiple narrators in Rashomon style, Miramar is a story of residents of a pension, its owner Mariana and her servant Zohra. Zohra is beautiful and all the three young men are attracted to her, and so there are fights and it all ends with a murder. That all sounds cliché right? And even characters arent necessarily too complex and there are a lot of things left unexplained especially in the first chapter but the story is also a very

Not a bad book, but I'm a little maxed-out on Mahfouz, apparently the only Middle Eastern author that anyone reads. I mean, the guy is an admirable writer (better in the original Arabic), but there are scores of amazing authors out there, many very experimental, that get short thrift because of this fellow. That being said, the novel at hand is decent. It's basically a re-working of the "Rashomon" theme where four different tenants in the Pension Miramar in Alexandria recount their versions of

I lost count of how many times I have read this novel over the years. In Arabic the depiction of autumn in Alexandria is so poetic and nostalgic. There are several points of view, but they make a combined chorus at the end to reflect Egypt in the 1960s and how individuals cope with turbulent times. I may read it again.

Just started the third perspective. I don't know if it is because it was the first or I like the man the most, but the first one was my favorite so far. After finishing the book, the first is still my favorite. He was level headed throughout. He was also the most caring and honest.I am not sure why I liked this book, but I did. Maybe it was something I had never read before or an area I know little about so I couldn't do comparisons on any of it.This book is about the residents of The Miramar
