But the Lie is at work, and the consequences are all too clear in Candido's Sicily - a land 'dreamed', but no less real for that. Untruth comes in a dozen shapes and brings with it a huge burden of injustice and suffering. It can be outfaced only by innocence.

I read this as the second book in an edition which also contained A Simple Story which I reviewed. Not of the detective genre like A Simple Truth, this one unvieled to me reminiscences of reading Latin American literature in translation and of Italo Calvino's of Baron in the Trees.
